Xena is ADOPTED!

Breed:  Belgian Malinois / German Shepherd mix
Age:  1 year
Gender:  Female
Weight:  35 lbs.
Heartworm Status:
ID #:

Xena is a petite and pretty little girl.  She is young, affectionate, and learns new things very quickly.  Xena LOVES treats and, though she hasn't shown any interest in toys at the shelter, that is common in this distracting environment and she may really like them in a home.  Xena is an energetic girl and would love an active family.  She wants to be an indoor dog and needs a home with a fenced yard.

Though she was great with other dogs when we started the program, Xena has gotten a little overly excited by them lately.  This happens sometimes with our high energy dogs because they get so little exercise and they get frustrated.  She does very well during training, though, and learned how to sit, lay down, stay, has a super fast come, and is also learning other tricks like play dead, leave it, spin, stand on a box, and more!  She is also learning to go in a crate.  Xena learns very quickly.

Xena likes attention and will roll over for belly rubs with her tongue lolling out the side of her mouth when she gets to know you.  She is a happy, bouncy girl.  She would probably be good with kids as she has been pretty patient with being handled.

This girl definitely has some good potential to do some doggie competitions so if you are interested in agility or obedience, check her out!  Or, if you are just looking for a silly, sweet, active companion, Xena would also be your girl!

From her handler:  "I would describe Xena as active, cheerful, energetic, entertaining, funny, friendly, outgoing, playful, sensitive, silly, smart, talented, and willing.  I chose these traits because, the more time I spend with Xena, the more she grows on me.  At first, I thought she wasn't very smart, but now I think she is smart, she's just young and silly.

Xena's breed is a highly active dog and they are engineered to run.  They are friendly but cautious towards other dogs.

Xena seems like the perfect dog for young, active kids.  I would love to see her adopted by a family with kids who love dogs and could match Xena's energetic attitude.  She doesn't seem very patient at first, but as she gets used to her environment, she 'loosens up' and is easier to handle.

Xena is definitely a very active dog.  I think she needs a fenced yard where she can run and burn off all her energy.  She catches on very quickly once she is sure of what it is that you want her to do, but it may take a while for her to figure out what that is.  She is very happy and loves to please her owners.

Xena hasn't shown interest in toys so far but she loves treats.  She doesn't seem to like to cuddle but she enjoys being petted, though she is a little independent."

starAdoption Information

Kids-N-K9s dogs may be adopted at any time during the program on a first come, first serve basis but may not go home permanently until graduation night.  We do not have class on the weekends and encourage adopters to take their dogs home during that time, though they must be returned before 3:00pm Monday afternoon for class.

Potential adopters must come to the shelter during regular business hours to complete an adoption application.  Phone adoptions are also available with special approval for long-distance adoptions.

Adoption fees range from $25-$75 and includes spaying/neutering, shots, a microchip, and a heartworm test.  All we ask is that you send your success stories to us to share with your dog's handler!
